President Declares "Freedom at War with Fear"
i found this today. it is the full text of the president's speech on sept. 20, 2001. i remember being so scared when i saw this. i went over to pam's house right after it was over and told her about i was sure it was his way of saying that the united states was going to be using nuclear weapons to fight al qaeda. it was also a very christian sounding speech. he talked about how al qaeda wanted the world to be ruled in the style of afghanistan and how they wanted to push the christians and the jews out of the eastern hemisphere.
i was kind of disturbed. and to be honest, i think that as time goes by, we may really see what it was like to live in germany in the late 30s. you know, everything must have seemed great. but really, the nation's prosperity was built on evil. not a lot unlike how the united states used slavery as a means to its ends. or how the same sort of mentality seems to thrive in some of the capitalistic leaders.
i wonder if the solution for the united states is to finally drop its guard against marxism, and let there be multiple parties for multiple beliefs. but that's probably all just crazy talk.
the fact is that since this speech, the united states has been using nuclear weapons, both against afghanistan and iraq. maybe not bombs, but depleted uranium munitions are just as amoral. and sooner or later, i imagine that someone else in the world will have to put their feet down for what is right.
i think i am just scared by that notion that the strongest have to be the ones to stand up for what is right (good old dag). it sort of implies that unless you are the strongest nation, you can't really stop the ones that get out of control. and that you are downright fucked when it's the strongest nation that is out of control.
